Horseback Riding at Price's Scrub

The primary recreational activity at Price's Scrub State Park is equestrian trail riding. The large, grassy area at the trailhead provides plenty of space to maneuver and park a horse trailer and is equipped with a watering trough for your trail riding companion.

From the parking area, discover a 9.5-mile-long sandy trail that provides access to an interesting range of natural sites. As you ride along, look for rare plants such as the imperiled angle pod, Florida spiny pod and blue flower butterwort among the vast spread of saw palmetto and pine trees.

The north end of the park offers shaded trails with rolling topography that affords scenic views of the sinkhole lake, known locally as Water Lily Pond. You are also likely to come across several smaller sinkhole lakes and a large borrow pit.

A 1-mile section of the Ocala-Micanopy segment of the historic Tampa-Lake City stagecoach road is located on the western part of the park. This tree-canopied historic  road was reportedly a connecting route from Micanopy to Flemington and is another picturesque spot worth exploring. The south end of the park is characteristic of an open scrub landscape with little shade.

During the summer months, this area is best enjoyed in the early morning when the air is still cool or as the day winds down and, hopefully, breezes pick up.

Conveniently located in the inviting grassy expanse of the trailhead parking lot, shaded picnic tables provide a relaxing setting.

Bring a picnic lunch to either kick-off or wrap-up your scenic trail ride, while your horse rehydrates at the adjacent watering trough.

Overall, there is no doubt that this park's striking ecology and lengthy trail system will make for an enjoyable horseback riding adventure.
