Barrier islands protect the mainland from the harsh effects of storms as well as providing habitat for shorebirds and other coastal animals.

Perdido Key State Park is located on a barrier island separating Pensacola from the Gulf of Mexico. At 247 acres, the park provides protection for several threatened and endangered species, including the Perdido Key Beach Mouse, nesting shorebirds and nesting sea turtles.

The Friends of Pensacola State Parks is our citizen support organization. This is a dedicated group of volunteers that you can become involved with! They generate support for Big Lagoon, Perdido Key and Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Parks through work projects, community relations, exhibits, fundraising activities, special events and educational activities.
