Spencer MacKenzie

Youth Volunteer of the Year Award for Resource Management

Spencer MacKenzie started volunteering two years ago at Henderson Beach State Park when he was 16 years ago. Since then, he has contributed more than 200 hours of volunteer service, using his positive thinking and problem-solving skills to tackle a big problem at the park.

Spencer was a part of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 504. For his Eagle Scout project, he worked with park staff and local businesses to design, build and install five “borrow boxes” to promote the reuse and recycling of beach gear, such as toys, chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards. His project including fundraising to purchase the materials and marketing the boxes.

Spencer’s project inspires others to remember that they, too, can use simple but effective methods to make a positive impact for their communities.
