Volunteer Spotlight, Mary Ann Hart

Mary Ann Hart

The Barnacle Historic State Park

Mary Ann Hart, a familiar face at The Barnacle for the past several years, has logged over 700 volunteer hours! While her many volunteer projects have ranged from trimming the park's heirloom Louis Philippe roses to repairing the Munroe House's custom window screens, she is most often found in the Commodore's Boathouse where her well-honed woodworking skills have been invaluable in mentoring senior high school students and adult volunteers in the Boatbuilding Program.

Mary Ann's current specialty is crafting beautiful orchid baskets, inlaid boxes and other useful trinkets to use for fundraising for the park's maritime needs. She creates these items using century-old Dade County pine floorboards salvaged from the Munroe House front porch and other rare, reclaimed woods.

Look for Mary Ann in the boathouse most Wednesdays. If you catch her there, be ready to hear a few good yarns about her fishing adventures, both here in Florida and in Northern California, and about salvaging planks and timbers along the shoreline in her sailing canoe.
